Individuals with Irlen Syndrome do not see words on the page in the same way as proficient readers. They may experience some of the following symptoms:

- Words seeming to fall off the page.
- Words moving together.
- Letters moving around - going backwards and rotating. This is particularly difficult for letters that are visually similar such as b,d,q,p etc.
- Letters switching around.
- The background may pulsate.
- The background may twist, flash.
- The background is too bright, glarey.
