Individuals with Irlen Syndrome do not see words on the page in the same way as proficient readers

Individuals with Irlen Syndrome do not see words on the page in the same way as proficient readers. They may experience some of the following symptoms:

• Words seeming to fall off the page.
• Words moving together.
• Letters moving around - going backwards and rotating. This is particularly difficult for letters that are visually similar such as b,d,q,p etc.
• Letters switching around.
• The background may pulsate.
• The background may twist, flash.
• The background is too bright, glarey.

For myself, reading print on a white background is very difficult. It is very bright and uncomfortable for my eyes. On my next post, I will explain some ways we can help with this bright background.
